Abstract

The flow over a backward facing step is a complex case in the scope of computational fluid dynamics, present in several cases in engineering. In the present work, computational simulations are performed using Reynolds Averaged NavierStokes equations (RANS) for a two-dimensional and steady state flow. The turbulence models used are Shear Stress Transport k- ω (SST k-ω) and Reynolds Stress Model (RSM). The results were compared with the literature data using direct numerical simulation (DNS). The main objective of the work is to compare the different turbulence models, focusing on the second order turbulence closure. The results presented in the RSM model are closer to the results found on direct numerical simulation. The main results analyzed in this paper are the reattachment length, mean velocity, pressure coefficient, turbulence intensity components and Reynold shear stress components.
