Nowadays, many studies about Emotional Intelligence (EI) are being developed around the world,
because of, especially, its relevance in organizations that need human relations to guarantee a
great operative capacity, such as in corporations and the Armed Forces. Despite this, few studies
have a conclusive result concerning EI and its relation to a subject cognitive, affective and
psychomotor efficiency. This work aimed to measure the Emotional Intelligence of Third-Year
Engineering Course cadets at Agulhas Negras Military Academy (AMAN) and correlate to their
academic performance. For this, the Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale (Schutte, Malouff,
Bhullar, 1998) was used, composed of two dimensions: expression and regulation of emotions
(ERE) and uses of emotions (UE). A personal information questionnaire was also applied
specifically for the present work. Forty-nine cadets from the same instruction year participated in
this study and besides the EI Scale, they also indicated their grades in subjects as Military
Physical Training (MPT) and their course classification (composed of cognitive, attitudinal and
psychomotor assessments). Making use of statistical analysis, it was possible to identify a positive
and meaningful correlation between EI (“use of emotions” dimension) and cadet’s classification
(r=0,321; p<0,005). However, the correlation to physical aptitude was with no statistical
significance. The results of this survey suggest that Emotional Intelligence (“use of emotions”
dimension) can be important to cadets during his/her formation at AMAN.
